Imagine working in Singapore when international calls to London had to be ordered a week beforehand. Imagine being a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Death Railway. Imagine switching jobs to work underground in a Philippine mine because it paid 100 pesos a month more. Imagine life as a White Russian in swinging Shanghai when Pudong was just rice fields. 'Tales from the Tiger's Den' is an oral history of Foreigners in the Far East -- 'Old Asia Hands' for want of a better word -- from the 1920s till present. I interview crocodile hunters, diplomats, missionaries, rubber planters, school children, expat housewives, traders, soldiers, etc, about their time in Asia. Some pre-date the second world war, others more recent. But in each case, an engaging insight into the changing face of life and lifestyles for foreigners in this part of the world. And a snapshot of Asia's turbulent modern history as seen through round eyes.
