Stu Lloyd is a 4th generation Rhodesian (Zimbabwean) and has spent a third of his life in Africa, a third in Asia, and a third in Australasia. He can’t account for the rest of his time! Stu has had six books published -- selling in 27 countries and being on best-seller lists in 3 -- and his travel writings appear regularly in The Weekend Australian, South China Morning Post, New Zealand Herald, National Geographic Traveler, Sunday Times, and inflights such as Etihad, Fah Thai, Tiger Tales, and Virgin Blue Voyeur, among others. He is a member of the Hash House Harriers running club and the Ulysses (Motorcycle) Club.
When not riding or writing, he collects tropical art, musical instruments, dabbles in painting exotica, and enjoys stamp collecting [pause for gasps of astonishment]. Biggest claim to fame? “I won 7th place in the Australian Potato Carrying Championships in 2001. Carried a 50kg bag of spuds one lap around a racetrack – the $10 prize money didn't quite cover the cost of the resulting knee reconstruction operation.”
If you really have to know,Stuart Lloyd (as his mother prefers him to be known!) has a B.A. in Psychology and Mass Communication from Macquarie University, Sydney, and also studied visual arts at Julian Ashton Art School, and travel photojournalism with the Australian College of Journalism.
He has been a professional writer for 25 years, starting off in advertising where he wrote over 100 TV commercials and 1000 press ads in an award-winning career as a copywriter and creative director with Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy & Mather, Ted Bates and the mighty Lloyd Martin agency (sold off to US multinational, FCB).
“Then I got sick of the corporate bullshit and wanted to be one man and a typewriter against the world.”
Having lived in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore, he's ecstatic to call Chiang Mai, Thailand, home.
